A recent volcanic eruption in Ethiopia has released large amounts of sulfur dioxide gas, spreading across significant parts of the Middle East. Shawkat Odeh, an expert from the International Astronomical Centre in the UAE, shared images showing the dispersion of this gas over Yemen and the Sultanate of Oman on November 24, 2025. The eruption has had notable environmental effects in the region.
Despite this, the UAE’s major airlines, including Emirates, flydubai, and Etihad, reported no impact on their flights. This contrasts with Indian carriers Air India and Akasa Air, which canceled some flights due to ash clouds spreading into the Red Sea and disrupting high-altitude routes between the two regions.
The spread of volcanic ash and gas has caused concern for air travel safety, prompting some cancellations and diversions. Aviation authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure passenger safety and minimize disruptions.
The event highlights the significant environmental influence that natural disasters like volcanic eruptions can have across borders, affecting not just local areas but neighboring countries as well.
