The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has launched a major health initiative aimed at strengthening disease surveillance, specifically focusing on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in East and Southern Africa. This program is a collaborative effort between Africa CDC and the Novo Nordisk Foundation, a Danish enterprise foundation.
The initiative targets ten African Union member countries in the region and is supported by a substantial grant of USD 2.65 million from the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The primary goal is to enhance the public health workforce’s capacity for monitoring and responding to NCDs such as diabetes, cancer, and heart diseases.
Key Objectives of the Initiative
- Improve the skills of health workers in disease surveillance and management
- Strengthen health systems to ensure timely detection and response to NCDs
- Reduce the growing burden of NCDs across East and Southern Africa
This project represents a notable milestone in Africa’s ongoing efforts to combat NCDs by promoting stronger health systems and better health outcomes. It aims to empower health workers with the necessary tools and data to track and manage diseases efficiently, creating a sustainable and lasting impact on public health in the region.
