Dec 20 Friday, NYC: Neil Cavuto, a business anchor, is one of the longest-serving hosts signed off from Fox News after a distinguished 28-year tenure. He joined the network at its inception in 1996 and became a prominent figure through his programs “Your World with Neil Cavuto” and “Cavuto: Coast to Coast” on Fox Business Network. His weekday afternoon news show has often agitated Trump and his supporters. He announced his farewell in his last show on Thursday.
Cavuto announced the news on Thursday in his Weekday afternoon program “Your World,” saying he had been planning to depart for “some time” but he is “not leaving journalism. I’m just leaving here.”
“I got to do what I love to do, report the news. Not shout the news, not blast the news. Not call names, just call balls and strikes, following the news, hold truth to power and fairness to all. That’s it, that’s me,” the host said.
Cavuto stated that he had been “offered a very generous opportunity for me to stay years more.” According to CNN and their sources, Cavuto was offered a contract extension, but at a lower salary, and he declined. His departure is effective December 19, 2024, signaling the end of an era for Fox News.
Throughout his career, Cavuto was renowned for his commitment to impartial journalism. He emerged to be one of the few remaining journalists to fact-check and even criticize Trump. He often delivered fact-based reporting that sometimes diverged from the network’s more opinion-driven segments. This dedication occasionally placed him at odds with political figures, most notably former President Donald Trump. Trump supporters were also dissatisfied with this dedication of Cavuto. As he was a Business host he felt it was important to separate fact from fiction as financial decisions were on the line.
2018, Cavuto openly challenged Trump’s assertions about tax cuts and economic growth, emphasizing the significance of accurate information. He stated, “Mr. President, it’s not the fake news media that’s your problem; it’s you.”
Such commentary did not go unnoticed by Trump, who often made his dissatisfaction known. In February 2020, at a rally in Colorado Springs, Trump dedicated a great deal of his speech to criticizing Cavuto, which reflected the tension between the two.
Despite these challenges, Cavuto maintained his journalistic integrity, striving to provide balanced coverage. His departure evoked reactions from various quarters, including Trump, who took to social media to express his views. Trump’s post on Truth Social read: “GOOD NEWS FOR AMERICA – Neil Cavuto is finally gone. Fake News doesn’t pay!”
In 1997, Cavuto was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, after fighting stage-4 Hodgkin’s Disease in the 1980s. After that, he hosted several events raising awareness of MS over the years and all praise for his efforts.
Cavuto’s exit leaves a notable void in Fox News’s programming lineup. The network has announced that rotating hosts will fill their time slots until permanent replacements are determined. Fox News lauded Cavuto’s contributions, describing his career as “a master class in journalism” and acknowledging his role in setting standards for business news coverage.
