Feb 4, Tuesday Cape Town: The Mining Indaba 2025 has kicked off in Cape Town. The Mining Indaba 2025 has kicked off in Cape Town, South Africa with a call to shape the continent’s mining future as said by the South African Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Gwede Mantashe.
The 31st Investing in Mining Indaba runs until Thursday, February, themed “Future-Proofing Mining, Today!”, is expected to draw over 10,000 attendees and features discussions on sustainable practices, economic diversification, and the future of the mining industry.
As of February 4, the conference has begun, with various industry leaders and government ministers in attendance, including President Cyril Ramaphosa. Delivering the keynote address, Cyril Ramaphosa sat at the opening ceremony on Monday morning and stressed this gathering of mineral wealth and how its people can share in it. He said that there is evidence that the continent hosts significant reserves of industrially important minerals.
Member of the National Assembly of South Africa, Gwede Mantashe noted that countries could not continue debating these minerals based on the dictates of some developed countries, as if they have no aspirations to accelerate industrialization and close the development deficit.
As South Africa assumed the Group of 20 (G20) presidency in December 2024, Mantashe further urged countries to leverage the opportunity presented by an economy leading the G20 for the first time for a full one-year term to shape a new era of the mining industry that meaningfully contributes to the socio-economic development of the continent.
