Feb 11, Wednesday 2025: Paul Martin, the USAID Inspector General was appointed by President Joe Biden in December 2023.
The White House dismissed Paul Martin, the Inspector General (IG) of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), a day after his office released a report critical of the Trump administration’s actions toward the agency. Martin had served as USAID’s IG Martin, who served as USAID’s IG since December 2023, was informed of his immediate termination via an email from the Office of Presidential Personnel.
The report from Martin’s office highlights that the administration’s freeze on foreign assistance and significant staff reductions had severely compromised USAID’s ability to oversee $8.2 billion in unspent humanitarian aid.
The report emphasized that these actions had rendered the agency’s oversight mechanisms “largely non-operational,” increasing the risk of funds being misused or falling into the hands of extremist groups.
This dismissal is part of a broader pattern, as the Trump administration has previously removed more than a dozen inspectors general from various federal agencies. Inspectors generally serve as independent watchdogs, tasked with identifying and preventing waste, fraud, and abuse within government operations.
The report highlighted that the reduction of USAID personnel and the sweeping freeze on foreign assistance had made it more difficult to track potential misuse of US taxpayer-funded humanitarian assistance. No official reason was stated for Martin’s termination.
