January 15, Washington: The United States imposed new sanctions on eight senior Venezuelan officials on Friday, coinciding with President Nicolas Maduro’s inauguration for a controversial third term following elections that Washington asserts were won by his opponent.
The U.S. Treasury Department stated that it had targeted “eight Venezuelan officials overseeing key economic and security agencies that facilitate Maduro’s repression and undermining of democracy in Venezuela.”
The sanctions list includes high-ranking military and police officials, as well as the heads of the state-owned oil company and national airline.
“Since last year’s election, Maduro and his allies have intensified their repressive measures in Venezuela,” said Bradley Smith, Acting Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence. “The United States, alongside its international partners, stands with the Venezuelan people in their call for new leadership and rejects Maduro’s fraudulent claim to power.”
These sanctions were announced on the same day that Maduro began a third six-year term amid widespread allegations of electoral fraud and repression. The United States and numerous other nations maintain that the opposition was the rightful winner of the election.
