Jan 31, Friday 2025: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has asked for the immediate evacuation of 2,500 children from Gaza.

This urge was made for children to receive medical treatment, citing their imminent risk of death in the coming weeks. After meeting with American doctors who warned that these children face high risks of death in the coming weeks.

Guterres said he was “deeply moved” by his discussion with the doctors, who had volunteered in Gaza during the ongoing 15-month-old war between Isreal and Hamas. As of January 31, 2025, the situation remains critical. Moreover, the healthcare system in Gaza is severely damaged due to the ongoing conflict.

“2,500 children must be immediately evacuated with the guarantee that they will be able to return to their families and communities,” Guterres wrote on social media

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that more than 12,000 patients were waiting for medical evacuations just before the ceasefire began on January 19, with 2,500 children being at the highest risk.

Doctors Feroze Sidhwa and Ayesha Khan, emphasized the need for a clear and centralized process for medical evacuations. They met with Guterres. This has not been established despite the ceasefire agreement.

The Israeli defense agency COGAT and Israel’s UN mission have not responded to requests for comment on the demand for medical evacuation of the 2,500 children. The WHO had helped evacuate 5,383 patients since the war began in October 2023, but most of these evacuations occurred before the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza was closed.
