UK, 10 Feb 2025:
In the UK, human rights activists have expressed concerns over possible law enforcement political meddling after the Chris Kaba murder case, as this would allow for the potential disregarding of police accountability. The shooting of Chris Kaba involved a matter where police used firearms against Kaba after they had stopped his vehicle and encircled it with police cars on September 5, 2022. The officer in question, Sergeant Martyn Blake, was charged with murder, but he was acquitted this week. This verdict was made by a jury within hours of the end of the trial.
The police, however, maintain that firearms officers are in a so-called “cops are stand-off” position and must be considered as all “heroes” who are out there in the line of duty protecting the public instead of being treated as “ordinary felons.” Nonetheless, some human rights activists believe that the UK has a suitable broad record of not prosecuting excessive force offenders amongst law enforcement officials, with only a single successful conviction out of such offenses by police since 1990.
From 2023 to 2024 there was a 10 percent increase in police use of force, which coincided with the highest number of fatalities due to the police in the last ten years. Advocacy groups argue that police brutality, especially regarding violence towards blacks and other marginalized people, is extremely high. They warn that the lack of accountability for police actions suggests that officers are largely above the law.
In the wake of the high-profile case, police officers have threatened to stop using firearms or protest in major cities, fully armed and armored, if the law is not altered. Experts believe that the political pressure may ultimately result in the UK government amending the law to grant greater protection to law enforcement, reducing scrutiny and further insulating them from accountability.
