Astronomers in the UAE have successfully spotted the crescent moon marking the start of Dhul Hijjah, an important Islamic month. This sighting took place at a special observatory in Abu Dhabi. The moon was visible from the Jebel Al Nazwa site in Dubai, chosen for its clear horizon and minimal humidity.
The crescent sighting confirms that the first day of Dhul Hijjah will begin on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. Following Islamic tradition, the Eid Al Adha celebrations will start on Friday, July 6, 2025. Authorities had requested the public to watch the skies on the evening of May 27 and report any crescent sightings to the official Crescent Sighting Committee.
The moon sighting is crucial as it determines the exact dates for religious observances during this holy month, especially Eid Al Adha, when Muslims perform special prayers and rituals including Qurbani, the sacrifice of livestock.
The observatory’s team plays a vital role each month in monitoring the lunar cycle to aid the country’s Islamic calendar. Their work supports the accurate timing of significant events for the UAE’s large Muslim community.
