Istanbul, February 27, 2025:
Istanbul will host a crucial meeting between U.S. and Russian diplomats on Thursday to address the operation of their respective embassies in Washington and Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed on Wednesday.
The meeting follows recent talks in Saudi Arabia, where both nations agreed to improve diplomatic and economic ties. This shift, occurring under U.S. President Donald Trump’s second administration, marks a departure from previous efforts to isolate Russia over its war in Ukraine.
A U.S. Embassy official in Ankara confirmed the discussions but stated that Ukraine would not be on the agenda. The focus will be on resolving embassy staffing issues that arose from mutual diplomatic expulsions in recent years.
Lavrov, speaking from Qatar, accused the previous U.S. administration of creating obstacles for Russian diplomats, prompting reciprocal actions from Moscow. He expressed hope that the meeting would lead to a smoother diplomatic process.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry confirmed the technical-level meeting but did not disclose further details. Turkey also reiterated its willingness to facilitate future peace negotiations.
