Feb 14, Turkey: A Turkish court has sentenced 18-year-old Russian national Yekaterina Burnashkina to 15 years in prison for abandoning her newborn daughter in an airport restroom, Russian state media reported. The incident occurred at Antalya Airport on October 13, 2024, when cleaning staff found the infant with her leg stuck in a toilet drain. The child was rescued and placed in an orphanage.
The Antalya Fourth High Criminal Court convicted Burnashkina of the attempted murder of a close relative. Her mother, Yelena, 47, was acquitted of all charges last week and allowed to return to Russia.
Russia’s Consul General in Antalya, Sergei Vetrik, stated earlier this month that efforts were underway to repatriate Burnashkina, though the consulate has not commented on the verdict. Her lawyer plans to appeal, arguing Burnashkina acted without criminal intent, but noted extradition to Russia is unlikely.
The case has sparked debate over the circumstances surrounding the abandonment and the severity of the sentence, with calls for a balanced approach to justice and compassion.
