US President Donald Trump has directed the construction of a new facility for the detention of immigrants on a massive scale at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba.
This facility is not to be confounded with the Guantanamo military prison, as it has been theorized that it will be able to accommodate as many as 30000 people. Its goal is to hold the most ‘criminal’ illegal aliens who have been accusing American citizens.
Trump’s plans to use Guantanamo for the detention of seekers have met strong furor, especially from human rights advocates. Detractors of these policies suggest that a facility to detain migrants at Guantanamo Bay is a step into the region of international law infringement due to the issues that have surrounded it in the past when it had been used to house controversial detainees. The Cuban administrations have also lamented the decision, stating that it is a brutal act against what they claim to be occupied land and that the USA is also engaging in unlawful detainment and torturing Cubans.
ICE (Immigrant and Customs Enforcement) has been directed by Kristi Noem, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, to put this high-security detention center into operation. The plan also mentions that once the migrants are intercepted, they will be brought directly to Guantanamo Bay by the US Coast Guard.
This announcement coincides with the signing of the Laken Riley Act, which mandates that undocumented immigrants arrested for violent crimes or theft must remain in jail pending trial. The law, named after a nursing student murdered by a migrant, marks a significant win for the Trump administration.
Despite the expansion of Guantanamo’s role in immigration detention, its costs and timeline remain unclear. The facility will reportedly double the US’s capacity to hold undocumented migrants, adding to the existing Guantanamo Migrant Operations Center (GMOC) that has long been used to house migrants detained at sea.
The expansion faces significant political hurdles, with Congress needing to approve funding through upcoming spending bills. The controversy surrounding the plan, especially the facility’s location and purpose, continues to stoke heated debate over US immigration policies.
