Sydney, Australia – A Sydney nurse who was suspended over a video in which she allegedly made threats against Israeli patients has been charged with multiple offenses.
Sarah Abu Lebdeh, 26, faces three charges: threatening violence to a group, using a carriage service to threaten to kill, and using a carriage service to harass or cause offense.
Ms. Abu Lebdeh and another man, Ahmad Rashad Nadir, were suspended from their roles at Bankstown Hospital after a controversial video surfaced online. The footage, reportedly filmed inside a hospital and shared by an Israeli content creator, showed the pair allegedly boasting about refusing to treat Israeli patients and making violent remarks. Authorities, however, confirm that there is “no evidence” they acted on these claims.
The video sparked widespread outrage, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemning it as “disgusting” and “vile.” Public pressure mounted, leading to a police investigation.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb praised detectives for their swift action despite the complexities of working with an overseas witness. “The charges represent a significant breakthrough in a highly sensitive case,” she said.
Ms. Abu Lebdeh was granted bail under strict conditions, including a ban on social media and travel. She is set to appear in court on 19 March. Mr. Nadir remains under investigation but has not been charged as he is receiving medical treatment.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over antisemitism in Australia. Earlier this month, the government introduced tougher hate crime laws following a series of antisemitic attacks, including arson and graffiti targeting Jewish homes, cars, and synagogues.
In January, authorities discovered a caravan packed with power gel explosives in New South Wales. Police warned that it had the potential to cause a “mass casualty event,” and a document found alongside it contained antisemitic rhetoric and a list of Jewish targets in Sydney.
