
December 31, Tuesday, Seoul: South Korea judiciary, issues arrest warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol. On December 3, Yoon declared martial law in a televised press conference, stating that he needed to eliminate, “anti-state elements”. Soon in response to this action, the lawmakers rushed and convened in Parliament to overturn this declaration within minutes.
The prosecution indictment report said Yoon informed the capital defense command chief, Lee Jin Woo, to the military to use lethal force if required for entry into the National Assembly. The reports also show that President Yoon had been planning Martial Law since the month of March with the military officials.
South Korea’s political tension intensified when last week President Han Duck-soo who was an acting President after Yoon’s impeachment was also impeached for rejecting the legislation, investigating former President Yoon.
On Tuesday the court issued an arrest warrant for the suspended and impeached President Yoon for his attempt to declare martial law in the country, the investigators charged him with “insurrection” and “abuse of power”.
The arrest warrant was asked by the joint Investigation Headquarters, although he failed to appear in court for his investigation on Monday, which was the third time after being ordered. Yoon’s Civilian rule declaration of martial law triggered many, which will go down in South Korea’s historical political act. The Parliament let go of him for his parliamentary duties, and the judiciary has yet to finalize his impeachment as President.
The former leader also faces charges of insurrection which could lead him to life imprisonment and even the death penalty could be announced. Even after the warrant was issued he has not been arrested yet, as law enforcement remains uncertain. The Presidential Security Service has already blocked three search warrants issued.
However, South Korea’s political tension heightened after this now the country’s Finance Minister Choi Sang Mok has stepped in as the acting President, his tenure began under unexpected and pressurizing circumstances, especially when the country experienced a tragic loss of lives through an airplane crash in Jeju killing 179 people.
