February 6, 2025, South Africa: South African President Cyril Ramaphosa firmly states in his annual State of the Nation address on February 6, Thursday 2025. Trump claimed on Sunday without any evidence that “South Africa is confiscating land and treating certain classes of people very badly” referring to a new law aimed at addressing racial disparities in land ownership.

While Ramaphosa did not mention Trump directly firmly stated that the nation “will not be bullied,” a remark widely interpreted as a response to recent criticisms from U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump had threatened to cut all U.S. funding to South Africa, alleging that the country was “confiscating land” and committing “massive Human Rights VIOLATION[s],”. Although he did not provide any evidence.

In a conference in Cape Town, Ramaphosa said “We are witnessing the rise of nationalism, protectionism, the pursuit of narrow interests, and the decline of common cause,”

Ramaphosa made these remarks hours after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he won’t attend a Group of 20 summit in Johannesburg this month citing reasons for South Africa’s efforts to address inequality and climate change.

Moreover, South African-born billionaire and Trump adviser Elon Musk has echoed these criticisms, highlighting restrictive laws that he argues deter foreign investment. Musk has been vocal about regulations affecting his Starlink internet service, which has faced challenges in obtaining a license to operate in South Africa due to requirements favoring Black ownership as part of the country’s Black Economic Empowerment policies.
