Hunan, China – March 1, 2025: A tragic accident on the Yuanshui River in Hunan province claimed at least 11 lives after an oil spill cleaning vessel collided with a small ferry on Tuesday morning. Five more people remain missing, while three survivors were rescued the same day.
The incident occurred at a section of the river approximately 60 meters deep and 500 meters wide. A viral video circulating on social media shows the larger vessel hitting the ferry from behind in calm waters, causing it to capsize.
According to local reports, 19 people were thrown overboard during the crash. Rescue teams worked tirelessly to recover the victims and managed to salvage the ferry by Friday night. The search for the missing passengers is ongoing.

One survivor recounted his escape, stating that he broke a window with his foot to get out. A relative of one of the victims mentioned that the ferry was the main mode of transportation for villagers in the area.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collision. The three crew members aboard the oil spill cleaning vessels were unharmed but detained for questioning by local police.
China News Agency reported on Wednesday that the larger vessel safely reached shore after the incident. However, officials have not yet provided details on what led to the accident. Attempts to contact local authorities for further information went unanswered on Saturday morning.
Rescue efforts continue as authorities work to locate the missing individuals and determine accountability for the crash.
