Jan 6 Tuesday, Senegal: Senegal Mauritania has kicked off natural gas production from the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project, a significant offshore development shaking the maritime border. This development marks the largest offshore project in West Africa’s history. Managed by BP in partnership with Kosmos Energy, the GTA project is anticipated to produce approximately 2.5 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually in its starting phase.
The GTA project is a deepwater system that will direct gas to a midwater floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel for processing. The processed gas will then be transported via pipeline to a floating LNG facility placed on the maritime boundary between the two nations. This development will enhance the economic landscapes of both countries by providing a new revenue source and enhancing energy security.
Gas production in Senegal is in line with the country’s government policy of transforming the nation’s economy based on its natural resources. The energy sector is likely to be an important driver of economic growth and may help enhance living standards and reduce poverty. However, questions arise regarding resource-generated wealth and the environmental implications of fossil fuel exploitation.
Mauritania, under President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani’s leadership, views the GTA project gave an impetus for economic development, particularly in the energy and mining sectors. The commencement of gas production is expected to attract further investments, stimulate job creation, and enhance infrastructure. Nonetheless, challenges like widespread poverty and regional security issues persist, necessitating comprehensive policy measures to ensure sustainable development.
Environmental groups have expressed concerns about the potential ecological impact of increased fossil fuel production, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and consideration of renewable energy alternatives. The governments of Senegal and Mauritania face the challenge of balancing economic development with environmental stewardship to ensure long-term benefits for their populations.
