In a statement, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev reported that Russian air defense systems erroneously brought down Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 in a tragic episode in Kazakhstan airspace on February 3, 2025.
At first, officials from Russia stated that the cause of the accident was probably due to a bird hitting the plane, or a gas cylinder exploding onboard. However, Russian leader Vladimir Putin later issued a somewhat unusual public “apology” wherein he accepted the responsibility for the incident calling it a “tragic accident.” In his statement, he detailed that the Russian air defense systems were deployed to deal with a supposed Ukrainian drone offensive attack when the aircraft was hit.
The place of the crash is one where Ukrainian and Russian forces have been trading fire for several months which makes some experts speculate the possibility of it being blended with the multi-faceted ongoing wars. One US official speaking to a news channel on the bases of anonymity confirmed that the preliminary investigations did suggest that a Russian anti-aircraft system was responsible for bringing down the plane.

The investigation into the crash is being led by Kazakhstan, as the incident occurred over its territory. However, Kazakhstan has stopped short of directly blaming Russia, maintaining a neutral stance given its close diplomatic ties with Moscow.
