The war between Russia and Ukraine, now entering its third year, escalated once again on Friday as violence on both sides of the border claimed at least three lives.
In northern Ukraine, a deadly strike hit a residential building in Chernihiv, leaving one person dead and five others injured. The attack, which occurred amid Russia’s ongoing bombardments of Ukrainian cities, marked another tragic chapter in a conflict that has displaced millions and claimed countless civilian lives. Local officials expressed outrage over the assault on civilian infrastructure, with many wondering how much longer this brutal war will continue.
On the Russian side of the border, fatalities were also reported. A man was killed in the Kursk region while walking on a road, which has reportedly been under Ukrainian control since a mass incursion in August. Additionally, the governor of the Bryansk region, located just a few kilometers from the Ukrainian border, confirmed the death of one person following a mortar strike on a village. The increasing toll on both sides of the border highlights the ongoing devastation as the conflict grinds on with no end in sight.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also shared grim news, reporting that Russia had launched a series of 300 attack drones and nearly 20 missiles on Ukrainian targets in the first three days of 2025. Despite the scale of the attack, Zelensky stated that most of the aerial threats had been neutralized by Ukraine’s air defenses.
Ukraine’s forces, around 1,700 soldiers from the 155th Mechanized Brigade, a unit involved in a high-profile initiative with French President Emmanuel Macron, have reportedly deserted before their first deployment in eastern Ukraine. This desertion points to ongoing issues with inadequate training and equipment shortages, which continue to challenge Ukraine’s military efforts in the war.
