Russia has launched the largest airstrike on Ukraine since the war began three years ago. The massive assault involved hundreds of drones, missiles, and decoys, targeting western, southern, and central regions of Ukraine. Ukrainian officials report at least six people were wounded, with significant damage to homes and infrastructure. The Ukrainian Air Force stated that Russia fired approximately 477 drones and decoys, along with 60 missiles overnight in this unprecedented attack.
During the assault, a Ukrainian F-16 pilot, Lieutenant Colonel Maksym Ustymenko, was killed after successfully downing seven air targets before his aircraft crashed. This marks the third loss of an F-16 fighter jet for Ukraine since they introduced the Western-made jets last year. President Volodymyr Zelensky has urgently called for increased support from the United States, expressing readiness to purchase American defense systems to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.
This latest escalation severely damages hopes for a quick end to the conflict and highlights the ongoing intensity of the war. The Russian assault signifies a sharp increase in military activity and demonstrates Moscow’s continued capacity to wage large-scale attacks.
