KYIV, Nov 21 – In a new escalation of the 33-month-old conflict, Russia has fired a hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile at the Ukrainian city of Dnipro on Thursday in retaliation for the United States and the United Kingdom allowing Kyiv to attack Russian territory with cutting-edge weapons.
In a live speech on television, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that Moscow had hit a Ukrainian military installation with a brand-new, medium-range, hypersonic ballistic missile called “Oreshnik” (the hazel) and issued a warning that more could be coming. According to him, before more attacks using these weapons, civilians will be alerted.

Following authorization by the administration of President Joe Biden, Ukraine reportedly launched six American-made ATACMS at Russia on November 19 and American-made HIMARS and British Storm Shadow missiles on November 21, said Putin.
Putin said, “From that moment, a regional conflict in Ukraine previously provoked by the West has acquired elements of a global character,” in an address broadcast on state television after 8 p.m. in Moscow, or 1700 GMT.
In response to Ukraine’s Zelenskiy’s statements about the new missile, he periods stated that its use was “a clear and severe escalation”
An individual confirmed that the U.S. had told Kyiv and allies that they were standing by for the possible use of such a weapon, while another stated that Russian officials had notified Washington moments before it was struck.
For the time being, Kyiv was assured that before the country’s vicinity had been as safe as it could be, an intercontinental missile system of unimaginable potential was used – none that had ever been utilized in warfare, intended to strike targets of nuclear importance over long distances.
On the other hand, Putin labeled the arsenal as the duel between the intermediate-range and intermediate-range ballistic missile, which covers a range of 3,000-5,500 km (1,860-3,415 miles), a statement that was echoed by NATO and US authorities thereafter.
According to Ukraine’s air force, it was fired from the Astrakhan region of Russia at a distance of over 700 kilometers (435 miles) and was targeting Dnipro in central-eastern Ukraine.
As Oslo University doctoral research fellow Fabian Hoffmann explained to me-who concentrates his research on missile technology and nuclear strategy-the most important characteristic of the weapon was its payload, which was MIRVed-that is, multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles.
“For signaling purposes,” he said, Moscow chose the missile. “This payload is exclusively associated with nuclear-capable missiles.”
Russia fired seven Kh-101 cruise missiles and a Kinzhal hypersonic missile, six of which were shot down, reported the Ukrainian Air Force.
The air force said the attack targeted Dnipro’s businesses and vital infrastructure. Dnipro is a place known for its production of missiles in Soviet times. After the beginning of the war, the military industry in Ukraine has developed, however, its location stays secret.
According to Regional Governor Serhiy Lysak, the attack caused fires in Dnipro and damaged an industrial enterprise. Two were injured in the attack.
A Ukrainian parliamentary sitting scheduled to take place on Friday has been adjourned due to security considerations, public TV channel Suspilne reported, with no other settings currently scheduled until December.
