Moscow, March 4 – Russia has banned Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and eight other Japanese citizens from entering the country in response to Tokyo’s continued sanctions against Moscow. The Russian Foreign Ministry announced the decision on Monday, stating “ongoing so-called sanction measures” imposed over Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.
Among those barred are Japanese Ambassador to Ukraine Masashi Nakagome, former Ambassador Kuninori Matsuda, and key officials from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), including Senior Vice President Shohei Hara and Ukraine office head Hideki Matsuriaga. Executives from major Japanese corporations such as IHI Corporation, Isuzu Motors Limited, Prodrone, and Cyberdyne have also been added to the entry ban list.
The move comes as part of Moscow’s broader retaliation against countries supporting Western sanctions. “As part of a response to Tokyo’s continued policy of restrictions against Russia, a decision was made to impose an open-ended entry ban on these individuals,” the ministry stated.
Japan has been a vocal critic of Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, imposing multiple rounds of sanctions, including asset freezes and trade restrictions. Tokyo has aligned itself with Western allies in condemning Moscow’s offensive. The latest diplomatic escalation further strains Japan-Russia relations, which have been tense over historical territorial disputes and economic measures.
While Tokyo has yet to respond officially to the ban, Japan’s sanctions on Russia have targeted individuals, businesses, and key industries. The new restrictions highlight the growing divide between the two nations as geopolitical tensions continue to rise in the region.
