At least 89 people have been killed and hundreds injured in a series of attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on villages south of Omdurman, near Sudan’s capital Khartoum, volunteer groups reported on Thursday.
According to the Sudanese Emergency Lawyers Initiative, the RSF launched assaults on 15 villages in the Al-Jamouiya area, involving indiscriminate shelling, direct gunfire, and clashes. The group condemned the attacks as “horrific massacres” and violations of human rights, urging an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian aid access.
The Coordination of the Resistance Committees in Karari locality stated that the attacks have been ongoing for seven days. In response, the Khartoum State government evacuated some residents to safer areas in Omdurman. Governor Ahmed Osman Hamza accused the RSF of “massacring defenseless civilians” and committing looting and displacement.
The violence follows recent territorial gains by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in Khartoum, including the recapture of the presidential palace and key locations. Meanwhile, the RSF claimed to have shot down a Sudanese army air force plane near El Fasher in North Darfur, killing nine crew members.
Since April 2023, the conflict between the SAF and RSF has claimed over 29,600 lives and displaced more than 15 million people, according to the United Nations.
