Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to meet with former U.S. President Donald Trump in either February or March, according to Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the State Duma’s International Affairs Committee.
In a statement made Thursday, Slutsky revealed that preparations for the summit are already at an “advanced stage.” However, he declined to give any specifics, warning that the leaders should be adequately prepared for the meeting. More information about the summit is likely to be released shortly.
The Kremlin confirmed earlier this week Kremlin stated Russian officials have “increased” their high-level contacts with members of Trump’s administration. While Trump revealed on Sunday that White House officials are engaged in discussions with Russian authorities aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, he did not confirm whether he had personally spoken to Putin.
Putin himself expressed last month his willingness to meet with Trump to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as well as other areas of mutual interest between the U.S. and Russia. The planned meeting is expected to cover major global issues, including the situation in Ukraine, the Middle East, and broader questions surrounding the future of the international order.
Slutsky, a member of the nationalist Liberal Democratic Party, also commented that the meeting would focus on “the most pressing issues in world politics.” He added that the summit’s agenda would reflect the complex geopolitical challenges both countries face. His remarks came after a closed-door briefing by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the State Duma.
As tensions persist between Russia and the West over the war in Ukraine, this upcoming summit is expected to attract significant global attention, with many awaiting further developments in U.S.-Russia relations.
