A devastating pair of earthquakes measuring magnitudes 7.7 and 6.4 rocked Myanmar on Friday, sending powerful tremors across the region, including Thailand, Bangladesh, northeastern India, and China’s Yunnan province. The quakes caused widespread damage, collapsing buildings in Myanmar and even toppling a high-rise in Bangkok, nearly 900 kilometers away.
Buildings Collapse, Casualties Reported
In Myanmar, at least three people were killed when a mosque crumbled under the force of the quakes. Meanwhile, in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, a high-rise under construction collapsed, leaving two laborers dead and over 40 others trapped under the rubble. Rescue operations are underway as emergency teams scramble to save those still buried.
The tremors were so intense that panicked residents fled their homes, while water from swimming pools in high-rises spilled over from the violent shaking. Authorities in Thailand declared an emergency and suspended metro and rail services as a precaution.
Aftershocks Felt Across the Region
The earthquakes triggered strong aftershocks, with residents in India’s northeastern states, including Meghalaya, reporting significant tremors. Bangladesh and China’s Yunnan province also felt the quake’s impact, though no major damage has been reported in those areas so far.
As rescue efforts continue, officials are assessing the full extent of the destruction. The rare intensity of these quakes capable of causing damage hundreds of kilometers away has raised concerns about regional seismic risks and building safety standards.
