The M23 rebels, who claimed to have captured the city on Monday after a weekslong advance, are one of about 100 armed groups striving for a foothold in mineral-rich eastern Congo. Goma, which borders Rwanda, has been a strategic target due to its proximity to major mining towns and its role as a vital economic hub.
“As I pray for the swift restoration of peace and security, I call on local authorities and the international community to make every effort to resolve the conflict through peaceful means,” he said.
Pope Francis also addressed the riots that occurred in Kinshasa, the capital of the DRC. During these riots, protesters stormed the embassies of countries they believe are complicit in the conflict in North Kivu province. In the ongoing clashes, 25 people have been killed in Goma and nine in Rwanda. Hundreds have been injured as well.
He expressed hope that all forms of violence against people and their property would cease and invited national and international leaders to make the greatest commitment to achieving a peaceful solution to the conflict.
The situation in Goma has led to significant humanitarian challenges, with thousands of residents fleeing their homes and hospitals being overwhelmed by the influx of injured civilians. The United Nations and various international organizations have called for an immediate ceasefire.
