Lima, March 17 – The Peruvian government declared a state of emergency in the capital, Lima, on Monday, deploying soldiers to the streets in response to a surge in violent crime that recently claimed the life of a well-known musician.
The 30-day emergency decree, which extends to the neighboring province of Callao, grants security forces additional powers to combat rising criminal activity. The move follows growing public outrage over the murder of prominent cumbia musician Paul Flores, who was fatally shot ,early Sunday when armed assailants attacked the bus he was traveling in.
Authorities reported that the attackers opened fire on the vehicle, leaving Flores mortally wounded. His killing has intensified concerns about the worsening security situation in Peru, where criminal organizations have increasingly targeted businesses, including transport companies, through extortion and violent attacks.
President Dina Boluarte addressed the growing unrest, stating that she would support the implementation of the death penalty for murderers. However, Peru’s current legal framework only allows capital punishment for cases of treason.
The emergency declaration grants police and military personnel broader powers to respond to crime, a measure enacted multiple times in recent years whenever criminal activity or social unrest has escalated. Officials hope that the latest crackdown will help restore order amid rising concerns over the influence of organized crime.
Despite government efforts to curb violence, including the recent arrests of gang members, the wave of extortion and attacks continues to instill fear among residents and business owners. Criminal groups have been increasingly aggressive, often targeting transport companies and small enterprises in extortion rackets.
The killing of Paul Flores has added fuel to public frustration, with citizens calling for stronger security measures and justice for the musician’s murder. His death has become a symbol of the broader insecurity affecting the country, with many demanding immediate and decisive action from the government.
As soldiers take to the streets in Lima and Callao, authorities are expected to intensify their crackdown on crime syndicates. However, it remains uncertain whether the military’s presence will lead to a lasting solution or merely serve as a temporary deterrent.
