March 17, 2025 North Macedonia: In the early hours of March 16, 2025, a catastrophic fire engulfed the Pulse nightclub in Kočani, North Macedonia, resulting in the tragic loss of 59 lives and injuring over 150 individuals. The incident occurred during a hip-hop concert by the local duo DNK, with approximately 500 attendees present, exceeding the venue’s official capacity of 250.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the blaze was ignited by pyrotechnic devices used during the performance. Sparks from these devices reportedly set the club’s flammable ceiling material alight, leading to a rapid spread of the fire. Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski stated, “Most likely, sparks caught a part of the ceiling that was made of flammable material, causing the fire to spread to the entire discotheque in a short period of time, creating thick smoke.”
The victims, predominantly teenagers, and young adults, faced severe burns, smoke inhalation, and injuries sustained during a stampede toward the club’s single exit. Health Minister Arben Taravari reported that 22 of the injured remain in critical condition.
Investigations have revealed that the Pulse nightclub was operating without a proper license. The venue was overcrowded, with attendance figures at least double its official capacity. Minister Toshkovski highlighted suspicions of corruption, stating, “We have grounds for suspicion that there is bribery and corruption in this case.”
In the wake of the tragedy, the North Macedonian government has declared a seven-day national mourning period. Authorities have detained 15 individuals for questioning and have initiated a comprehensive inspection of nightclubs and similar venues nationwide to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
The disaster has prompted an outpouring of condolences from international leaders. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed their sympathies. Neighboring countries, including Greece, Serbia, and Turkey, have offered medical assistance, with preparations underway to receive patients with life-threatening injuries.
This incident stands as one of the most devastating tragedies in North Macedonia’s recent history, shedding light on critical issues related to public safety and regulatory oversight. As the nation mourns, there is a collective call for accountability and systemic reforms to prevent such disasters in the future.
