As of February 6, 2025, it has earned over 5.8 billion yuan (approximately $796.32 million), surpassing the previous record held by “The Battle at Lake Changjin”
The film’s popularity is evident, with theater occupancy rates exceeding 90% and many prime showtimes sold out. “Ne Zha 2,” officially titled “Ne Zha: Demon Child Conquers the Sea,” is a sequel to the 2019 animated hit “Ne Zha.” Both films draw inspiration from the 16th-century Chinese novel “The Investiture of the Gods,” focusing on the mythological figure Ne Zha.
The film premiered in Chinese cinemas on January 29, 2025, alongside other notable releases such as “Detective Chinatown 1900” and “Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force.” These films collectively contributed to a record-breaking Lunar New Year box office, with total revenues reaching 9.5 billion yuan (about $1.3 billion), marking an 18.8% increase from the previous year
In addition to its domestic success, “Ne Zha 2” is making significant strides internationally. The film held its North American premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, drawing hundreds of fans and industry professionals from both China and the United States
Special screenings are scheduled to begin on February 12, with the official North American release set for February 1. Given its current trajectory, “Ne Zha 2” is on track to rank among the top 20 highest-grossing films worldwide.
