The former first lady, Michelle Obama has reportedly made it clear that she will not attend Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony next week, reinforcing her criticism of the newly elected president. As per reports, a close source to the former first lady stated, “Michelle doesn’t do something solely for the reason of an obligation to do something. She’s not one to wear a false smile for decorum.”
Following the publication of her biography, ‘Becoming’, Obama re-establishing her role within the public sphere valuing authenticity over tradition, while also maintaining that Andrew Trump’s 2017 inauguration was the last time she made an effort to put on a brave face. “For eight years, she was in the public eye without sparing any effort in serving the public,” said the source. “Now, she speaks out and acts only when she chooses to or believes in a cause.”
Once again joining her in championing her cause, Trump was her target during the Democratic National Convention 2020. While she was campaigning alongside Kamala Harris for Vice President during the elections, she accused Trump of spreading ‘racist lies. She stated that his actions were primarily motivated by his hatred towards her husband and his career.
Others include former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush along with their wives, who will join Barack Obama at the event on January 20. Breaking a long-established tradition, Trump did not attend Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021.
This decision makes it the second time in weeks that former First Lady Michelle Obama did not attend a presidential event. She missed the funeral of former US president Jimmy Carter, which she said had to do with her being on vacation in Hawaii.
The Obama Foundation declined to comment on her absence. However, assumptions about her deliberate disembedding from the conduct of Trump continue to gain ground. To quote one of her aides who has worked with her for a long time: “Michelle is protecting her integrity she is not a hypocrite.”
This all makes for a complicated situation, filled with tension, when one adds to it the observations of Melania Trump, the first lady, about the lack of support from Obama during the transition period of moving into the White House in 2017.
