2 May Mexico: Mexican Formula 1 fans, rejoice — the Mexico City Grand Prix has signed on the dotted line and officially extended its deal, ensuring it will stay on the F1 calendar through 2028. The deal guarantees the high-profile event will continue to be hosted at the famous Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit in the center of Mexico City.
The agreement, announced by Formula One Management (FOM) and CIE organisers of the Mexican Grand Prix, follows the existing contract, which was set to end in 2025. Under the new agreement, race fans can look forward to at least three more years of championship racing in Mexico.
It’s an instant of absolute pride,” indicated CIE President Alejandro Soberón Kuri. “Through the assistance of Mexico City’s government, namely Mayor Clara Brugada and President Claudia Sheinbaum, we are elated to continue bringing Formula 1 to our country.
The Mexico GP has had a storied past, initially making its debut on the calendar in 1963, and back again in stages throughout the decades. Its present streak started in 2015 and has never failed to attract enormous crowds, including more than 400,000 attendees over the 2024 race weekend.
Although Sergio Pérez’s departure from Red Bull in 2024 raised concerns over the event’s future, healthy attendance, loyal fan support, and prize-winning race organization secured its place. The event even won ‘Best Promoter’ five times running between 2015 and 2019.
Pérez remains a central figure in Mexican motorsport, and despite his recent F1 setback, rumors persist about a potential return via the upcoming Cadillac F1 team, which will debut in 2026.
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali praised the decision: “The energy in Mexico City is unmatched. Every year, the crowd delivers a festival of passion and excitement. We’re thrilled to continue this incredible journey.”
Statistically speaking, Max Verstappen is the most successful driver at the Mexican GP, having won the event five times in the last seven years from 2017 to 2023. The circuit, named after Mexican motor racing legends Ricardo and Pedro Rodríguez, is still a favorite among drivers and spectators.
This reaffirmation highlights Mexico’s ongoing relevance on the international F1 calendar — not merely as an event, but as a celebration of speed, culture, and tenacity.
