Thousands of protestors gathered on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago on Saturday evening to oppose President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration enforcement plans. The protest occurs ahead of a surge in federal operations aimed at tightening immigration controls in the Chicago area.
Many activists and immigrant rights groups voiced strong opposition to the President’s decision to send federal troops to the city as part of expanded immigration enforcement efforts. The demonstrations, organized by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights, saw participants carrying signs and chanting slogans against what they termed an unfair crackdown.
The influx of about 300 federal agents, coordinated from the Naval Station Great Lakes in North Chicago, is expected to begin ramped-up operations targeting undocumented immigrants. These plans have put many residents on edge, especially within local Latino communities, who worry about the impact on their families and neighborhoods.
The protests also coincided with the 2025 Pilsen Mexican Independence Day parade, which highlighted the community’s cultural pride amid rising tensions. Authorities have been monitoring the situation closely to maintain peace and order during the rallies.
The federal government’s move follows similar National Guard deployments in Washington, D.C., under Trump’s directives. The unfolding events in Chicago mark a significant chapter in ongoing debates over immigration policy and enforcement in the U.S.
