Riverton, New Zealand | March 26, 2025:
An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Riverton, New Zealand, on Tuesday, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor, which was initially registered as a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, was recorded at 2:43 PM local time (0143 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). The earthquake was felt approximately 159 kilometers west-southwest (WSW) of Riverton, located on the country’s South Island.
Authorities have confirmed that, as of now, no significant damage or casualties have been reported. In the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, New Zealand frequently experiences earthquakes. The latest tremor has prompted the concerned agencies to monitor the situation closely and prepare for potential aftershocks.
USGS and Authorities’ Response
The USGS shared details about the earthquake through a post on X. It also issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses, indicating a low likelihood of widespread destruction. According to the USGS website, the affected region primarily consists of structures highly resistant to seismic activities, though some vulnerable buildings may exist.
Meanwhile, New Zealand’s emergency management agency has been assessing the possibility of a tsunami resulting from the quake. In an official advisory, the agency stated,
“If a tsunami has been generated in this location, it is not likely to arrive in New Zealand for at least one hour.”
The agency has urged residents in coastal areas to remain cautious and stay informed through official updates.
Residents React to the Tremors
Despite the earthquake’s magnitude, many residents in the affected areas reported only mild tremors. Ben Sievwright, a Café and Bar manager in Invercargill, described his experience to a news channel, stating,
“I felt a little sway. Just a little wee shake, nothing too eventful.”
Ongoing Monitoring and Preparedness
New Zealand authorities continue to monitor the situation and evaluate potential aftershocks. The country’s emergency response teams are on standby to manage developing threats. Residents are advised to stay alert and follow official guidelines, especially regarding tsunami warnings and safety precautions. Keep Reading Questiqa.com for more news.
