17th March, Khartoum, Sudan:
Sudanese authorities have discovered multiple bodies at the bottom of a well in Khartoum, just days after government forces reclaimed the area from the notorious paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), officials said Sunday.
Police reported that the bodies of 11 individuals, including women and children, were retrieved from a deep well in the city’s Fayhaa neighborhood on Saturday. The grim discovery was made after residents alerted authorities upon finding a dead body in the well.
“We found inside this well different characters (bodies), males and females, adults and children,” said Col. Abdul-Rahanan Mohamed Hassan, who leads the civil defense’s field operations in Khartoum. He added that search efforts were ongoing, as authorities believe more bodies may be hidden below.
Authorities accused the RSF of executing the victims before dumping their bodies in the well. The paramilitary group controlled the area before the military’s recent advances in Khartoum and the neighboring city of Omdurman. As of Sunday, the RSF had not issued any response regarding the allegations.
Eyewitnesses from the area recounted the brutality of RSF forces during their occupation. Afraa al-Hajj Omar, a resident of Hajj Youssef neighborhood, stated that the paramilitary forces had killed many civilians, leaving their bodies on the streets for days. “They robbed us, beat us, and tortured us,” she said, adding that several bodies had been thrown into the well.
Sudan has been embroiled in violent conflict since April 2023, when long-standing tensions between the military and the RSF escalated into full-scale warfare. The war has devastated major cities, including Khartoum, and led to widespread atrocities.
The conflict has resulted in the deaths of at least 20,000 people, though the actual number is believed to be much higher. Over 14 million people have been displaced, with parts of the country now facing famine-like conditions. The United Nations and human rights organizations have documented numerous war crimes and crimes against humanity, including mass rapes and ethnically motivated killings, particularly in Darfur.
In recent months, the military has made significant gains, pushing RSF forces out of key areas in the capital and beyond. However, the conflict shows no signs of abating, as both sides continue to engage in fierce battles for control of the country.
