Marc Fogel who was wrongfully detained by Russia, now released

Feb 13, 2025, Washington: Marc Fogel, an American historian who was deemed wrongfully detained by Russia has been released and returned to the US. The White House has described it as a diplomatic thaw that could advance negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

The Kremlin stated on Wednesday that a Russian citizen was freed in the US in exchange for Moscow’s release of American Marc Fogel was arrested. Steve Witoff, a special envoy for President Trump, left Russia with Fogel and brought him to the White House late Thursday.

Fogel was arrested in August 2021 and was serving a 14-year prison term for drug trafficking. He was freed and returned to the U.S. on February 11, 2025, where he was greeted by President Donald Trump at the White House.

Trump also has talked about having a good relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin who launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Last month Trump stated that he was having serious conversations with Russia about the war.

The Kremlin stated that a Russian citizen was fired in the United States in exchange for Fogel’s release, though it did not identify the individual until they arrived in Russia “in the coming days” Trump welcomed Fogel home.

Fogel expressed his gratitude, saying he felt like “the luckiest man on Earth right now” as he stood next to Trump. The US will release Russian Alexander Vinnik, a suspected cybercrime kingpin, as a part of an exchange with Russia. Vinnik operated BTCe, once one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges.
