
Jan 27, 2025: Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, met with Taliban officials on Sunday, Jan 26, marking the first visit by an Iranian foreign minister to the Afghan capital in 8 years. This meeting aimed to discuss tensions along their shared border. The treatment of Afghan refugees in Iran and water rights.
Araghchi stated that Iran is committed to the return of some 3.5 million Afghan refugees and has no intention of interfering in its neighbor’s domestic politics. This visit is seen as an effort to improve relations between Iran and the Taliban government in the country of Afghanistan, despite Iran not formally recognizing the Taliban government.
This meeting was attended by top Taliban officials including Afghanistan’s Prime Minister Mohammad Hassan Akhund and Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. The discussions focused on the implementation of the Helmand River water treaty. The treaty envisions shared water resources between the two countries.
