International Women’s Day is observed on the 8th of March every year, is a global observance honoring the social economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It also serves as a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
Every year on March 8, the world unites to celebrate International Women’s Day- a day to honor the achievements, struggles, and resilience of women everywhere. But in modern times, women do more than just contribute to society; they shape it.
Today’s women wear multiple leaders, professionals, caregivers, entrepreneurs, and changemakers often balancing demanding careers with family responsibilities. They don’t just participate in the workforce: they drive innovation, push boundaries, and redefine industries.
In the modern world, the roles that women play have increased to an extent. Today’s women wear multiple hats, be they leaders, professionals, caregivers, entrepreneurs, and changemakers-often balancing demanding careers with family responsibility.
They don’t just participate in the workforce; they drive innovation, push boundaries, and refine industries. Yet despite these achievements, women continue to battle stereotypes, unequal pay, and the invisible burden of managing homes alongside their professional lives. Managing domestic roles of being a daughter-in-law, daughter, wife, and mother, AND juggling professional roles. The difference between olden times and modern times is only the increase in the roles of women. Juggling with work, babies, and domestic responsibilities.
A Long Way To Go:
Corporate Sector:
- Chief Executive Officers (CEOs): Women hold less than 10 CEO roles among FTSE 100 companies.
- Executive Positions: In G20 companies, women occupy 15.9% of executive roles but hold only 10.7% of decision-making power.
Political Sector:
- Parliamentary Representation: Globally, women constitute 26.5% of national parliamentarians, a marginal increase from 25.5% in 2021.
- Heads of State and Government: As of May 2024, 28 women serve as heads of state and/or government across 28 countries.
United Nations:
- Leadership Roles: Women have led only 12% of prominent UN institutions, and all but four of the 78 Presidents of the UN General Assembly have been male.
These statistics highlight the ongoing gender disparities in leadership positions globally, underscoring the need for continued efforts toward achieving gender equality.
While gifts and flowers are nice gestures, true respect and care for women should extend far beyond a single day of celebration. Instead of merely acknowledging their contributions, let’s actively support, empower, and uplift them in meaningful ways.
Reimagine Workplace Equality
Fight for equal pay and leadership roles. Women do not have to struggle for something that should already be theirs-fairness. Women do not have to struggle for something that should already be theirs- fairness and acknowledgment. Provide flexible work arrangements to assist women juggling work and home duties.
Share the Mental Load at Home

Household duties ought not disproportionately burden women. Share the burden! Support men participating equally in childcare, housework, and affective labor. Normalize discussion regarding gender roles at home and work against stereotypic expectations.
Foster Financial Independence
Educate women and young girls in money skills, investing, and building wealth. Empower women’s enterprises—buy, invest, and publicize their services. Offer financial support or counseling to women from disadvantaged groups to enable them to escape economic dependence.
Prioritize Women’s Health and Well-being
Provide women with access to quality healthcare, including mental health care. Support workplace wellness initiatives that deal with issues such as burnout and work-life balance. Foster open conversation about women’s reproductive health, menstruation, and menopause without shame.
Educate and Empower the Next Generation
Raise children in a community where respect for women is not imparted but demonstrated. Incorporate gender equality in the curriculums of schools, such that both girls and boys comprehend and admire the other’s place. Debunk sexism on TV shows, literature, and day-to-day conversation.
Be an Ally, Every Day
Interrupt when you observe sexism, harassment, or discrimination—at the workplace, out on the streets, or even at home. Teach girls and women to dream big and believe in their aspirations, whether that’s launching a business, seeking public office, or having a non-traditional career. Express unconditional support not only on March 8 but year-round.

International Women’s Day: Make It Count
This International Women’s Day, let’s do more than trend and hashtag. Let’s celebrate women for more than one day. Let’s pledge to make actual changes that enhance their lives daily.
Women have always been the pillars of society—today it’s time the world finally stands alongside them, rather than applauds from afar. Let’s create a world where every woman is not just admired, but empowered to excel.
Because when women succeed, the entire world succeeds along with them.
