A UN-backed food security group has declared a famine in Gaza City and its surrounding areas, marking the first time famine has been officially recognized in the region. Over half a million Palestinians are now facing severe conditions including starvation, acute malnutrition, and potential death. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) reported that this catastrophic situation is entirely man-made and has been intensified by prolonged conflict and restrictions on humanitarian aid access.
The famine declaration follows more than 22 months of war in the region, which has heavily disrupted:
- Food supplies
- Healthcare services
Aid agencies warn that without immediate intervention, the famine will likely spread further, endangering more lives.
Israel has denied the famine reports, calling some of the data “fabricated” and politically motivated. Meanwhile, Britain criticized Israel for what it termed a ‘moral outrage’ due to its refusal to allow sufficient aid into Gaza.
The United Nations emphasizes that without a ceasefire and the lifting of blockades to enable humanitarian deliveries, avoidable deaths will soar. Children are especially vulnerable as supplies of fortified milk and nutritious foods run critically low.
This grim assessment is raising international pressure on all parties to urgently address the crisis and prevent further suffering in Gaza.
