France’s Government has collapsed after just three months of new leadership. In a tensed turn of events, Prime Minister Michel Barnier was ousted by a no-confidence vote in the National Assembly. This marked the short tenure for a Prime Minister since the country’s Fifth Republic was founded. The PM was isolated by the MP’s motion to side against him just after three months of him in office as chosen by President Emmanuel Macron.
The motion was backed by 331 French lawmakers and started by opposing his budget proposals for 2025 particularly hikes in tax and spending cuts. This stepdown will further France’s political instability because after snap elections led to not even one group having a majority in the parliament. MPs were obliged to abstain from voting or vote yes in Wednesday’s vote. A total of 288 votes were required for the motion to pass, there were 331 votes in favor of the motion. Accordingly, Michel Barnier the former Brexit negotiator is obliged to present a resignation of his governance as well as the budget that triggered his step down.
With this drastic shift in the polotical leadership brings urgency for President Emmanuel Macron. of finding a new Prime Minister who can. navigatae the deeply contrvened pariament and make sure that the 2025 budget is passed.
This seems challenging as the lower house of parliament remains divided between Macron’s centrist coalition, Le Pen’s far-right National Rally, and a fragmented left-wing alliance. Le Pen of the opposition party has seem to be having influence. Her National Rally is a major player in French politics as of niw and has seixed the oppurtunity to promote her agenda. She has even accused him of stubbornness in the face pf the country’s financial torubles.
“It’s up to his conscience to decide whether he can sacrifice public action and the fate of France to his own pride,” she said during the debate. Despite her opposition to Macron’s goveernment she has shown assertiveness for a possible allaince if they agree with her fiscal policies.
