Feb 1 Saturday, 2025 Washington: Some federal websites temporarily went dark on Friday after federal agencies were directed to comply with a White House order to remove certain language about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
Public health data disappeared from websites, entire webpages disappeared and employees worked to remove pronouns from email signatures to comply with President Donald Trump’s directive on Friday.
Some pages appeared with the message: “The page you’re looking for was not found.” Websites from various federal agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), removed webpages related to HIV, contraception, and gender identity.
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) instructed agencies to remove references to “gender ideology” and to place DEI workers on paid leave. Some websites, such as those from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Justice Department, briefly went dark but later came back online.
This directive followed President Donald Trump’s executive order which he signed on his first day in office, recognizing only two genders, male and female which prohibit the support of DEI efforts within military and civilian agencies. That was to be reflected on official documents such as passports and policies such as federal prison assignments.
