
January 8, Brussels: The European Union is being pushed by Berlin to smooth out sanctions on Syria. Berlin has sent out proposals. Berlin has sent out proposals for relief restraining in exchange for new reforms for the leadership in Damascus.
The Assad-era sanctions on Syria which is a part of the Western drive to support the country’s political transition and infrastructure development after going through 13 years of civil war. Two official proposal documents were given to the European Union Capital just before Christmas with their personal touch of suggestions for the areas through the bloc’s penalties against Syria, according to the three familiar people involved in that matter.
The proposal was that should even out in exchange for the country’s new policy through the implementation of several reforms to get some upper hand over the de facto leader, Islamist former militant Ahmed al-Sharaa. The detailed document about how the EU could lift the restrictions imposed on Damascus bartering it with working on social issues which includes the protection of women and their rights and non-proliferation of weapons, “While the sanctions against those who committed serious crimes during the civil war must be maintained, we are actively discussing ways in which we can relieve the Syrian population of sanctions in certain sectors,” a German official told in a press conference, and declined the comment made.
Although the European Union is not on a clear page about the support of all the 27 member states for their sanctions to be released, some capitals are still talking about the full assessment of the new Damascus and how it will be governed in the future. Still, many Western officials are careful about this matter, as this formation of the new Damascus would hold with their religious ideologies.
