Ethiopia has embarked on an ambitious project to build Africa’s largest airport in the town of Bishoftu, located just southeast of the capital, Addis Ababa. This development aims to significantly boost the country’s aviation capacity and strengthen its position as a regional aviation hub.
The new airport is designed to handle millions of passengers annually, featuring state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure to support both passenger and cargo flights. It is expected to relieve pressure on Addis Ababa’s existing Bole International Airport, which has been struggling with congestion due to rapid growth in air traffic.
Key features of the new airport include:
- Multiple runways capable of accommodating the largest commercial aircraft.
- Modern terminals equipped with advanced security and passenger service technologies.
- Extensive cargo handling facilities to promote trade and economic development.
The Ethiopian government anticipates that the airport will create thousands of jobs and stimulate the local economy in Bishoftu and surrounding regions.
Construction is expected to proceed in multiple phases, with completion targeted within the next few years. The project underscores Ethiopia’s commitment to expanding its infrastructure and enhancing connectivity within Africa and globally.
