Dubai has taken a significant stride towards advancing future transportation by granting permits to three Chinese companies to test driverless cars on some of the city’s roads. This announcement was made during an exclusive event hosted by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Baidu, with Khaleej Times being one of the select media organizations invited.
Baidu introduced its sixth-generation self-driving taxi, the Apollo Go RT6 model, representing a key milestone in the development of autonomous vehicle technology within the UAE. This effort aligns with Dubai’s comprehensive strategy to adopt smart technologies and innovate its transport system to enhance safety, efficiency, and convenience for both residents and visitors.
The permits granted enable these companies to conduct real-world trials, which will help improve autonomous driving software and hardware amid the city’s dynamic traffic conditions. Officials anticipate these trials will expedite the incorporation of driverless vehicles into Dubai’s transport network, supporting the emirate’s ambition to become a global smart city leader.
This initiative also fosters partnerships between the UAE and Chinese technology firms, thereby strengthening bilateral cooperation in the areas of artificial intelligence and intelligent transport.
