14 Feb 205, AOMORI—The Aomori prefectural police on Friday arrested two doctors for allegedly concealing the murder of a patient at Michinoku Memorial Hospital in Hachinohe in March 2023.
The suspects, brothers Takashi Ishiyama, 61, former hospital director, and Tetsu Ishiyama, 60, the victim’s primary doctor, are accused of falsifying the cause of death of Seietsu Takahashi, 73. Takahashi was brutally attacked by a fellow inpatient, who stabbed him in the face multiple times with a toothbrush handle on March 12, 2023. He succumbed to his injuries the following morning.
The assailant, a 59-year-old man hospitalized for alcohol addiction, was later sentenced to 17 years in prison for murder. However, the Ishiyama brothers allegedly concealed the crime, issuing a death certificate falsely stating pneumonia as the cause of death. They also misinformed Takahashi’s family, claiming he had fallen.
The cover-up unraveled when another hospital official, suspicious of the case, reported the matter to the police on March 13. A legal autopsy confirmed that Takahashi died from head and facial injuries. The police subsequently searched the hospital in April 2023 for evidence of falsified medical records.
Takashi Ishiyama now heads Kyorinkai, a medical corporation operating hospitals in Tokyo. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
