A 29-year-old man was badly hurt after a crocodile attacked him at a zoo in the Philippines. The accident happened at the Kabug Island Mangrove and Wetlands Park in the town of Siay. The man went inside the crocodile’s area because he thought the animal was not real.
Police said the man climbed over a fence to get closer to the crocodile. He was holding his phone and wanted to take pictures. A zoo worker had already warned him not to go in, but the man did not listen. He believed the crocodile was just a plastic statue.
Soon after he stepped inside the enclosure, the crocodile, a large female named Lalay, bit his arm and dragged him into the water. People nearby screamed as they saw what happened. The crocodile did a “death roll,” a spinning move that crocodiles use to tear apart their prey.
Even though the attack was violent, the man stayed awake and sat in the water while people called for help. The same zoo worker who warned him earlier ran in and used a piece of concrete to hit the crocodile. After being hit, the crocodile finally let go of the man.
Rescue workers quickly arrived and took the man to Dr. George T. Hofer Memorial Hospital. He had deep bite wounds on his arm and leg. Doctors gave him more than 50 stitches. Reports say the man has a mental condition, which may have affected his decision-making.
Police are now investigating the case. They want to know how the man was able to get into the crocodile’s area and whether the zoo had enough safety measures. The zoo has closed the crocodile exhibit for now. Staff are planning to make the fences higher, add more warning signs, and make sure visitors are better supervised.
A video of the attack has been shared widely on social media. Some people feel sorry for the man, while others say he should not have entered the enclosure. Animal rights groups have also spoken out, saying zoos must make sure both people and animals are safe.
Police officer Joel Sajolga said, “This was very dangerous. He is lucky to be alive. People must follow the rules in places with wild animals.”
The man is still recovering in the hospital, and the investigation is ongoing.
