China has launched the Type 076, an amphibious assault ship named Sichuan, which represents significant progress in improving its naval fleet. A vessel with 40,000 tons is an advanced developed to implement the omnidirectional launch of aircraft. This land contributor is further equipped with arrestor technology for efficient landings for greater operational efficiency in providing ground troop support and aerial backup operation.
The design of the Type 076 is a two-in-one combination of amphibious landing ships and aircraft carriers; hence it’s dubbed as a “light aircraft carrier.” The Type 076 is at least 260m long, larger and more powerful than the American Navy’s America-class and Japanese Izumo ships. As such, it shows that China greatly strives to modernize its navy and expand its global reach.
The ship’s primary role is deploying ground forces and offering air support with a consequent multiplying effect on the offense of coastal power operations. Capturing amphibious elements reflected in the electromagnetic catapult system could follow the advanced launch system used on China’s CNS Fujian aircraft carrier. The ship is largely expected to launch UAVs, but other uses for manned aircraft may continue to generate plenty of speculation.
Launch of the Type 076 complements the efforts by China to consolidate its efforts in any sphere of modernization of its military forces as far as nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and advanced submarines. These would develop within the ambit of providing a credible blue-water navy that is potent and capable of projecting its power long ranges away from its shores.
