January 2, Thursday, Antofagasta: Chile’s Antofagasta struck an earthquake with a magnitude of 6. According to the reports of the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), an earthquake magnitude of 6.1 struck Chile’s Antofagasta, 84 km in the northwestern region of Calama.
Many videos of the incident have been posted by the locals online which showcase the damages around, from various unverified CCTV footage have been posted online, which has caused a major outbreak and different reactions.
Previously in November, an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck in the southern part of Chile, but there were no emergencies that caused panic among the citizens and the forecast department didn’t give any early warnings of other natural disasters and tsunamis.
The earthquake was 278 kilometers west-northwest of Cochrane, Chile, according to several reports provided by the USGS said that the quake at 6:37 am Chilean time, and had a depth of 10 kilometers. Chileans had the memory of 8.8 magnitude that struck in 2010 which also got along a tsunami that killed 526 people. Chile’s “Ring of the Fire” is uniquely an earthquake-prone area, where it struck. This earthquake also affected their neighboring country Bolivia.
