March 5, São Paulo: It’s morphin’ time for Brazil’s police as they blend into Carnival celebrations to crack down on crime. In São Paulo, dozens of officers disguised themselves as clowns, priests, and even characters from the Power Rangers TV series to arrest pickpockets during the festivities.
On Tuesday, São Paulo Gov. Tarcísio de Freitas shared a video on his social media channels showing two officers dressed as video game characters Mario and Luigi apprehending a suspect. However, the biggest hit among revelers has been the six Power Ranger-clad officers who have been in action since Saturday, the first day of Carnival, which officially ends on Wednesday. Police reported that the Rangers arrested one suspect carrying seven stolen cellphones, with several other raids also taking place.
A video released by São Paulo state’s public security secretariat shows the Yellow and Red Rangers arresting a man and placing him in a police car. The footage also captures the Green and Red Rangers immobilizing a suspect on the ground as onlookers cheer.
By early Tuesday, authorities said six people had been arrested, and 23 stolen cell phones had been recovered by the undercover officers since Carnival began nationwide. This strategy was also employed last year.
“The Power Rangers of our police are once again putting on a full show during Carnival,” Gov. de Freitas said on Sunday on his social media channels. “Go, go Power Rangers!” Police noted that criminals from various Brazilian states flocked to São Paulo’s Carnival to steal phones, which could grant access to bank account apps, leading to even greater losses for victims. Over the weekend, police revealed that a gang had rented an apartment in the city as a hub for their theft operations. Keep Reading Questiqa.com for more updates.
