Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Suspends Rumble Over Non-Compliance

22 Feb, Brasília, Brazil:

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the suspension of video-sharing platform Rumble on Friday for allegedly refusing to comply with court orders. The decision comes after Rumble failed to appoint a legal representative in Brazil within a 48-hour deadline set by the court.

Moraes accused Rumble of “repeatedly, consciously, and willingly” defying Brazil’s legal system. One of the ignored rulings involved removing the account of Allan dos Santos, a fugitive and supporter of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who has been residing in the U.S. since 2020. Moraes stated there was “no evidence of the regularity” of Rumble’s legal representation in Brazil.

Rumble, known for its stance against “cancel culture,” condemned the suspension, calling it “unprecedented censorship in Brazil.” The platform rejected extraterritorial censorship demands, arguing that the orders conflicted with U.S. free speech laws.

The suspension follows similar actions by Moraes, including banning Elon Musk’s X in Brazil in August. X was reinstated after more than a month once it complied with court orders.

Rumble and Trump Media & Technology Group have joined a lawsuit in Florida against Moraes, accusing him of violating U.S. free speech protections.

Critics have questioned the enforceability and legality of Moraes’ decisions, with some labeling them authoritarian. The ruling has reignited debates on judicial overreach and digital platform regulation in Brazil.
