Bosnia’s Security Minister Nenad Nesic and six other individuals were arrested on Thursday in connection with a high-profile investigation into organised crime, including charges of money laundering, abuse of office, and bribery. The arrests followed a probe led by the state prosecutor’s office and the Interior Ministry of the Serb Republic (RS), part of Bosnia’s autonomous region. The investigation centers around alleged corruption at the public company, Roads of RS, where Nesic served as general manager from 2016 to 2020.
The investigation is focused on the suspected mismanagement and illicit financial dealings within the Roads of RS, a key public entity in the region. Nesic’s arrest has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, given his prominent position as the country’s Security Minister. The prosecutor’s office did not release the names of all those detained, though one of the arrested individuals, Lucic, was identified. His lawyer, Nina Karacic, confirmed that Lucic’s house was searched, and he is facing charges related to “accepting bribes.”
The arrest comes amid heightened tensions in Bosnia’s political sphere, especially with RS President Milorad Dodik, a vocal critic of the central government. Dodik has accused Bosnia’s prosecutor’s office of orchestrating a campaign of persecution against RS officials, including Nesic. In a statement posted on his X profile, Dodik condemned the procedure as “totally unacceptable.”
As the legal proceedings begins, the case is expected to stir further debate over corruption within Bosnia’s political system, drawing attention to the challenges faced by the country in its fight against organized crime and corruption.
